Minnesota State Sweeps Wayne State in Doubleheader

MANKATO, Minn. – The Minnesota State Mavericks (23-7, 16-2 NSIC) hosted the Wayne State Wildcats (20-14, 12-9 NSIC) at Bowyer Field on Wednesday afternoon, sweeping the doubleheader with a 12-5 win in game one and a 2-0 victory in game two.

Game 1 – Minnesota State 12, Wayne State 5
A ten-run fourth inning powered the Mavericks to a commanding win in game one.

Minnesota State broke the game open in the fourth, capitalizing on timely hitting, patience at the plate, and defensive miscues from Wayne State. Cole Yearsley sparked the rally with a double to right field and later added a two-RBI single. Charlie Schau chipped in with an RBI single, while Logan Miller drew a bases-loaded walk. Ethan Bowers highlighted the inning with a steal of home as part of a double steal, taking advantage of a lapse by the Wildcats.

Jake Berkland added an RBI single, and CJ Trask reached on an error that brought in another run as MSU continued to pour it on. The Mavericks' discipline at the plate led to multiple walks that turned into scoring opportunities.

Wayne State responded with a three-run home run in the sixth inning, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome. Minnesota State added an insurance run in the fifth when Yearsley drew another bases-loaded walk.

Sam George earned the win, improving to 6-0 on the season. He pitched six innings, allowing five hits and four earned runs while striking out five without issuing a walk. Nick Johnson closed out the game with one inning of scoreless relief.

Yearsley led the Mavericks offensively with three hits and four RBIs. Berkland scored three runs and added an RBI, while Schau finished with two hits and two RBIs.

Game 2 – Minnesota State 2, Wayne State 0

The Mavericks relied on dominant pitching and timely offense to complete the sweep.

Mack Crowley delivered a standout performance, tossing seven scoreless innings while allowing just four hits and one walk with three strikeouts. Ben Irsfeld followed with two perfect innings of relief, striking out one and earning his second win of the season.

After a scoreless start, Minnesota State broke through in the eighth inning to secure the win. Logan Miller recorded a hit and scored a run, while Cole Yearsley added an RBI to help seal the victory.

"Championship teams find different ways to win." Said head coach Matt Magers. "In the first game we won with a big inning 10 runs and 11 hits. In the second game we had to find a way to win. We only had three hits all game and we were able to score two runs and that shows what type of team we can be."

Minnesota State returns to action on Saturday, April 11, as it travels to face Southwest Minnesota State at Legion Field in Marshall, Minn., with first pitch scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
