MINNETONKA, Minn. — Minnesota State (18-6, 11-1 NSIC) continued its dominant weekend with an 11-1 run-rule victory over Concordia University, St. Paul (10-17, 5-10 NSIC) on Sunday at Veterans Field, closing out the game in seven innings.
The Mavericks broke things wide open in the sixth inning, plating five runs to put the game out of reach. Ethan Bowers jumpstarted the rally with a two-run home run to left field, scoring Cole Yearsley. Pambos Nicoloudes followed with an RBI double to bring in Charlie Schau, while Jake Berkland added an RBI single. CJ Trask capped the inning with a base hit up the middle, driving in Berkland and extending the lead to 11-1.
Minnesota State set the tone early with a three-run third inning. Bowers delivered an RBI single, Schau added a hit to keep the momentum going, and Logan Miller contributed with a productive sacrifice fly. After Concordia-St. Paul tied the game in the first inning, the Mavericks quickly regained control and never looked back.
On the mound, Minnesota State's pitching staff was dominant, combining to limit Concordia to just one run while keeping its offense off balance throughout the game. The bullpen was especially effective, shutting down any late opportunities.
Nick Johnson was impressive in two innings of work, allowing no hits or runs while striking out two. Gannon Reidinger worked a scoreless inning, and Kaeden Guida added a clean frame. Ben Irsfeld closed things out in dominant fashion, striking out all three batters he faced.
At the plate, Jake Berkland led the way with two hits, two RBIs, two runs scored, and two stolen bases. Bowers powered the offense with a home run, two runs, and three RBIs, while Nicoloudes added a double, two runs scored, and an RBI.
"Overall, it was a really solid team win." said head coach Matt Magers. "We were able to capitalize with two big innings offensively, and our pitching staff did a great job executing. I was especially impressed with our defense and our ability to catch and throw at a high level."
Minnesota State returns to action on Tuesday, March 31, traveling to face Sioux Falls at 1:30 p.m. at The Birdcage in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
