ELKHORN, Neb. — The Minnesota State Mavericks (15-6) used a powerful offensive performance to defeat Minot State 13–2 Saturday at Frerichs Legion Field. The Mavericks recorded three home runs and broke the game open with a five-run fifth inning.
Minnesota State took control in the bottom of the fifth.
Cole Yearsley led off with a single before
Owen Sikkink drove in a run with a double.
Charlie Schau followed with another RBI double, and
Logan Miller added an RBI single.
Jake Berkland capped the inning with a two-run home run to center field, pushing the Mavericks' lead to 7–2.
The Mavericks got on the board earlier in the second inning when
Pambos Nicoloudes doubled to drive in Yearsley and tie the game at 1–1. Minnesota State added another run in the third, taking advantage of hit batters and an RBI single from Yearsley.
MSU added five more runs in the seventh inning to put the game away. After an error and two walks loaded the bases,
CJ Trask drew a walk to force in a run.
Brandon Vlcko followed with a grand slam to left field to extend the lead.
Yearsley led the Mavericks offensively with four hits, three runs scored, two RBIs, and a home run. Berkland finished with two RBIs and a run scored, while Vlcko drove in four runs with his grand slam.
Louis Magers earned the win on the mound, pitching five innings with four strikeouts and allowing one earned run.
Ben Irsfeld added two scoreless innings of relief, striking out two and facing just six batters.
Minnesota State returns to action Saturday, March 28, as they face Concordia-St. Paul at 12:30 p.m. at Barnes Field in St. Paul, Minn.
