Mavericks Open 2026 with Doubleheader Sweep Over UMD

MANKATO, Minn. – Minnesota State softball (2-0) opened the 2026 season with a thrilling 6-4 victory over Minnesota Duluth (4-3) before closing out the doubleheader with a commanding 4-1 win Saturday, Feb. 7, at the MSU All Sports Dome. The Mavericks used a two-run third inning to take control in the opener and added two more runs in the fifth, while a strong pitching performance in game two limited UMD to just two hits.

In the opening game, Minnesota State was led offensively by Maddie Helin, who went 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs. Carly Kimmes recorded a double and drew a walk, scored a run, and added four assists on defense, while Gianna Lara contributed an RBI single in three at-bats. In game two, Izzy Hycnar turned in a strong all-around performance with a run scored, an RBI, and six assists at third base. Lara continued her hot day with two hits and an RBI, and Ireland Broderick posted two hits, including a double, while driving in a run.

The Mavericks opened their season with a bang, earning a 6-4 victory that also marked a special milestone as Kristle Wolcott celebrated her first win as head coach. Minnesota State answered an early two-run deficit by scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning. Kimmes walked and later scored on a single from Lara, while Helin crossed the plate on a bases-loaded walk by Maddie Oetzmann.

MSU took control in the third inning with a four-run rally. Ysabel Lerma pinch ran and scored, Hycnar delivered an RBI single, and Ryanne Mellum was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run. Broderick and Finley Anderson each added RBI singles, pushing the Mavericks ahead 6-3. Minnesota State's defense held strong the rest of the way, allowing just one additional run from the Bulldogs. Oetzmann went the distance in the circle, striking out five and allowing four runs on seven hits while pitching a complete game.

In the second game, Minnesota State broke through in the third inning. Kimmes doubled to left center, and Helin followed with a single to bring home Kimmes and Chloe Brandt, who had drawn a walk. After UMD trimmed the margin to 2-1 in the fifth, the Mavericks responded with two more runs. Helin tripled to right center to score Anderson, then came home on a fielder's choice by Lara to make it 4-1.

Freshman Jorey Fry anchored the Mavericks in the circle, tossing a complete game while allowing just two hits and striking out eight. Fry surrendered only one earned run and controlled the game throughout, sealing MSU's second victory of the day.

Up next, the Mavericks will face Southwest Minnesota State on Friday, Feb. 13, at 5 p.m. and then at 7 p.m. at the Maverick All-Sports Dome in Mankato, Minn.
