MSU Bounces Back for Game Two Win, Splits with Mustangs

MANKATO, Minn. — Minnesota State softball (3-1) earned a doubleheader split against Southwest Minnesota State (3-3) on Friday, Feb. 13, falling 9-4 in the opener before rallying for an 8-7 victory in a back-and-forth second game at the Maverick All-Sport Dome.

In the opener, the Mavericks fell behind early and were unable to recover, as four costly errors proved difficult to overcome. SMSU struck first in the opening inning, using a single and a Minnesota State error to set up a two-run double and take an early 2-0 lead.

Minnesota State answered in the third inning after trailing 2-0. Following a strikeout, Finley Anderson drew a walk and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Maddie Helin. Senior Gianna Lara then reached on an error, advancing Anderson to third, before Izzy Hycnar delivered a single to left field to score Anderson and cut the deficit to 2-1. The score held at 2-1 through three innings.

The sixth inning saw the Mavericks push back again. Lara singled and reached third on a double from Hycnar. Ysabel Lerma, pinch-running for Lara, scored on a pop-up from Maddie Oetzmann, making it 5-2. However, in the seventh, the Mustangs pulled away with four runs off hits and an error, extending their lead to 9-2. Minnesota State made a late effort in the bottom of the inning, with Avery Dorman singled and Helin hitting a two-run homer, but it wasn't enough as the Mavericks fell 9-4.

In the second game, the Mavericks bounced back with a nail-biter, edging the Mustangs 8-7. Minnesota State showcased a powerful offensive display with six doubles, even as SMSU mounted a late two-run charge in the seventh inning.

The game started with both teams trading blows, with the Mustangs grabbing a 3-2 lead in the first inning. MSU quickly answered, as Lara knocked in a run, followed by a triple from Nyah Hulbert that evened the score.

In the second inning, Minnesota State seized momentum, notching four runs. Dorman and Hannah Tong hit doubles, with Dorman scoring on Tong's hit. Helin kept the rally alive with a two-RBI double, and Lara's RBI single pushed the Mavericks to a 6-3 advantage.

Although Southwest Minnesota State closed in during the third, making it 7-5, the Mavericks responded as Anderson tripled and Dorman singled her home, extending the lead to 7-5 after three innings. The Mustangs tied the game at 7-7 in the seventh with a two-run effort, but Minnesota State had the final say in the ninth. Helin doubled to open the inning, and Lara's double sent her home, clinching the win. The Maverick defense held firm in the top of the ninth to seal the 8-7 victory.

Jorey Fry delivered a gutsy performance in the circle for Minnesota State, pitching all nine innings while allowing seven hits and seven runs (six earned), issuing seven walks and striking out one. Despite a rocky start, Fry settled in to hold the Mustangs scoreless across six frames, showcasing resilience and poise.

Helin turned in a stellar performance, scoring three runs with three hits, including two doubles, and two RBIs. Lara added four hits, including two doubles, and three RBIs, while Carly Kimmes stood out defensively with five assists at second base.

Up next, the Mavericks will face Emporia State on Friday, Feb. 20 at 12 p.m. in Topeka, Kan.
