MARYVILLE, Mo. --- The University of Mary evened the weekend series against Minnesota State on Saturday as the Marauders won both games by the scores of 7-6 and 17-7.
MSU now owns an overall record, including a 5-1 NSIC record. UMary improves to 5-7 on the season with a 2-4 NSIC record.
Game 1 Recap
The UMary Marauders defeated the Mavericks 6-5 in game one.
Sophomore
Cale Haugen (0-1) took the loss in relief as he allowed two runs, on two hits, in two innings. Junior
Mack Crowley got the no decision as allowed just two runs, one earned, in five innings, while striking out three. Cole Smith (1-0) got the win in relief as he allowed one hit, while striking out three in two innings. Sam Hayen earned the save in the ninth inning despite issuing three walks.
After a scoreless first three innings, the Mavericks broke the deadlock in the bottom of the fourth as they rallied for three runs on three hits. Sophomore
CJ Trask drove in the first run via a groundout, before a sacrifice fly from senior
Brandon Vlcko drove in another. Junior
Pambos Nicoloudes plated the third run of the inning with an RBI-triple, before the Marauders could get out of the inning.
UMary managed to tie the game at 3-3 by the top of the sixth. The Marauders took advantage of two doubles and a Maverick error to score two runs in the fifth, before an RBI-single from Kieran Gaffney tied the game in the top of the sixth.
MSU responded with two runs in its half of the sixth to reclaim the lead at 5-3. With the bases loaded and nobody, Nicoloudes brought in the first run as he was hit by the pitch. Then with one out, senior
Cole Yearsley drove in another run with a single to left field, before the Marauders got out of the jam.
The Marauders then answered right back with two runs in the seventh and eighth innings to go up 7-5. Isaac Pegors accounted for three of the four runs as he drove in one with an RBI-single in seventh and two with another RBI-single in the eighth.
The bottom of the ninth saw the first three Maverick batters reach base via a walk, before Nicoloudes drove in the runner on third with a sacrifice fly. Another walk would load the bases again, but a strikeout and a diving catch by UMary's left fielder ended the game with UMary up 7-6.
Senior
Louis Magers scored three of MSU's six runs, and recorded two hits, while Nicoloudes drove in three runs.
Game 2 Recap
The Marauders finished the day with a 17-7 win over the Mavericks in game two.
Freshman
Kaiden Guida (0-1) took the loss as he allowed two runs, on four hits, in 2.0 innings of relief. Jacob Burgess (1-1) earned the win relief as he allowed one unearned run in two innings.
MSU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Vlcko notched an RBI-double that scored sophomore
Jake Berkland. In the top of the third, UMary responded with four runs, including a three-run homer by Bryce Leafgren to take a 4-1 lead.
The Mavericks answered with their our four-run inning in the fourth to retake the lead at 5-4. A single, a walk and a hit batter loaded the bases for Magers who then belted a grand slam to center field to put MSU up 5-4.
Both teams exchanges runs in the fifth as the Mavericks still held the lead at 6-5. In the top of the sixth however, UMary scored two more runs off an RBI-single from Kalem Haney to reclaim the lead at 7-6.
The Marauders then put together a 10-run inning in the top of the seventh to go up 17-6. UMary recorded six hits in the inning as the Marauders also took advantage of one Maverick error and three walks.
Freshman
Marshall Gordon recorded an RBI-double for MSU in the bottom of the seventh, but the Mavericks would get no more as UMary secured the 17-7 win.
Magers led MSU with four RBI, while Berkland recorded two hits and scored two runs.
Minnesota State returns to action at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on March 5 in Davenport, Fla., as it takes on Saginaw Valley State at 8:15 a.m.
