WINONA, Minn. – For the second time in as many days, Minnesota State tennis posted a 6-1 win against an NSIC opponent, this time against MSU Moorhead in Winona on Sunday. The Mavericks took two of three doubles matches and five of six singles positions to pull away.
 
The Mavericks excelled in singles on the weekend. Freshman Julia Gurholt defeated the preseason NSIC player of the year Luzmary Diaz 6-2, 2-6, 10-7 in a tiebreaker for the third set. Alma Vazquez, Lucie Sliskova, Amanda Blanco-Epple and Taina Cordeiro all collected straight set singles wins for MSU on Sunday.
 
Minnesota State (2-0, 2-0 NSIC) plays Minnesota Duluth on Saturday, February 21 at 4 p.m. in Winona. The Mavericks also defeated Minnesota Crookston 6-1 on Saturday.
 
"It was a successful weekend for our program," said head coach Drew Hawthorne. "I was very proud of how our singles players took care of business. Julia won a tough match. She brought the heat and it paid off. We will continue to work on our doubles play moving into this week with a concentration on being aggressive at the net. Our two matches were a good introduction to our younger team on what to expect against NSIC competition. I look forward to getting back to training for our next match against UMD."
