BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Minnesota State volleyball team (7-12, 5-6 NSIC) lost the match to Bemidji St. (14-5, 6-5 NSIC) 3-0 (20-25, 25-27, 28-30) on Saturday. Minnesota State hit .368 with 48 kills and pushed the final two sets past 25 points, but Bemidji St. won both.
Avery Klein led the Mavericks with 13 kills and 15 points while hitting .480 and adding two service aces. Klein has recorded at least 13 kills in four consecutive matches
. Jadyn Lester recorded 22 assists, six digs, two blocks and an ace.
Olivia Sturgis finished with nine kills on a .571 hitting percentage and added two blocks.
Avery Rosenberg also posted nine kills while hitting .400.
Kaelyn Wieland recorded a season-high 16 assists.
SET ONE
The Mavericks were in front 8-4 after early kills from Sturgis and Klein, a Lester service ace, two Bemidji St. attack errors and a
Kyla Klein ace. BSU tied the set at 8-8 with four straight points, moved ahead 10-9 on Ava Athman's kill and later went up 17-13 after Ella Kratochvil's kill and Kayla Gallagher's ace. MSU answered with a Lester block, an
Addison Foor kill and a Lester kill to pull within 17-16, and Foor later made it 18-17 with another kill. The Beavers scored the next four points to lead 22-17, reached set point at 24-19 on Athman's kill and closed the set 25-20 on Kratochvil's kill.
SET TWO
Bemidji scored the first three points of the second set, including an Ava Athman kill and a service ace, before Minnesota State pulled even at 3-3 on an
Avery Klein kill and back-to-back
Lily Riese kills. The teams traded small swings until the Mavericks moved from a 16-14 lead to 20-14, getting a Rosenberg kill, a BSU bad set, a Lester and Sturgis block and a
Morgan Bjella ace during the four-point stretch. The Beavers cut the gap to 20-17, and after kills from
Ella Lindgren and Foor put Minnesota State ahead 22-19, Bemidji St. scored three straight points to tie the set at 22-22. The Mavericks earned set point at 24-23 on
Avery Klein's kill and again at 25-24 on Lester's kill, but the Beavers answered each time and closed the set with a Maverick bad set and a Nevaeh Carlson kill for a 27-25 win.
SET THREE
Minnesota State traded points with BSU through 10-10 before kills from Sturgis and
Avery Klein, along with a
Jaelyn LaPlante service ace, pushed the visitors ahead 12-10. After Bemidji pulled even at 12-12, the Mavericks rebuilt the lead behind kills from Sturgis, Rosenberg and Riese and a
Kyla Klein service ace, with two Beaver attack errors making it 19-14. Bemidji State came back to tie the set at 20-20, and the teams kept exchanging points until Rosenberg's kill gave Minnesota State a 24-23 edge; the Beavers scored the next two before
Avery Klein tied it at 25-25 and served an ace for a 26-25 lead. The Mavericks also went in front 27-26 on a Riese kill and 28-27 on Rosenberg kill, but BSU answered each time and took the final two points, closing the set 30-28 on a Madison Tripp service ace.
