MANKATO, Minn. – Minnesota State (6-0-1, 4-0 NSIC) remained unbeaten on the season with a 2-0 victory over Jamestown on Sunday afternoon at The Pitch. Behind another dominant defensive performance, the Mavericks collected their seventh shutout of the fall and improved to 3-0 on their home field.
The Mavericks wasted little time establishing control of the match, recording 12 first-half shots and forcing Jamestown goalkeeper Skylar Lind into multiple saves. The breakthrough came in the 27th minute when graduate forward
Meghan Sullivan found the back of the net. Senior defender
Courtney Kovacs delivered the assist, setting up Sullivan's second goal of the season to give MSU a 1-0 lead.
Minnesota State kept pressing throughout the opening 45 minutes, generating corner kicks and quality looks from
Maille Mathis,
Avery Korsching, and
Savanna Stockness.
In the second half, MSU continued to apply pressure, outshooting Jamestown 14-1 over the final 45 minutes. The insurance goal came in the 69th minute when sophomore forward
Ruthie Gyasi buried her first goal of the year, assisted by
Elan Litt.
Defensively, goalkeeper
Lauren McAlpine and the back line of Kovacs,
Maclayne Menzel, and
Anna Van Wyngarden limited Jamestown's attack to just three total attempts, none of which seriously tested the MSU goal. The shutout marked McAlpine's seventh of the season.
Overall, the Mavericks dominated the stat sheet, holding a 26-3 advantage in shots and a 9-0 margin in corner kicks. Seventeen different Mavericks saw action in the match, highlighting the team's depth and balance.
With the win, Minnesota State extends its unbeaten streak to seven matches to open the year. The Mavericks return to play next weekend as they travel to Southwest Minnesota State and Sioux Falls.
