MANKATO, Minn. – Minnesota State baseball capped off its regular season in style, taking down Southwest Minnesota State 7-5 in game three at Bowyer Field to complete a three-game sweep. The Mavericks also celebrated their seniors in front of the home crowd, making the victory even more meaningful.
Southwest Minnesota State opened the scoring in the top of the first with a two-run home. But the Mavericks wasted no time responding. In the bottom half of the inning,
Ike Mezzenga singled and was driven in by a double from
Aidan Byrne, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
MSU tied things up and took the lead in the second inning thanks to clutch hits by
Jake Berkland and
Nick Baker, along with a Mustang error. A solo home run from
Louis Magers in the fifth extended the Mavericks' lead to 4-2.
SMSU tied the game 4-4 in the seventh after a pair of runs scored, but MSU had the final say. In the bottom of the eighth, Mezzenga launched a three-run homer to left center, scoring
Logan Miller and
Matthew Fleischhacker to give the Mavericks a 7-4 lead.
Southwest would score one more in the ninth, but it wasn't enough, and Minnesota State held on to secure the sweep.
The top-seeded Mavericks will face No. 8 seed UMary on Wednesday, May 7
th in the first round of the double-elimination NSIC Tournament in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at Noon CT at The Birdcage.
