MANKATO, Minn. –
Aidan Byrne and
Ike Mezzenga struck with back-to-back home runs in the top of the first inning and Minnesota State baseball carried the momentum to a 10-5 win over Henderson State Saturday afternoon in the NCAA Division II Central Region Tournament at ISG Field.
The Mavericks (50-7) reached fifty wins in a season for the second time in program history, and Byrne set the MSU all-time career record for hits (290). The Reddies (32-24) were eliminated from the double elimination tournament after dropping games to Pittsburgh State and Minnesota State.
The Mavericks will play again Sunday at Noon against the loser of Pittsburgh State and Arkansas-Monticello at ISG Field.
Byrne lifted his fourth home run of the season over the left field fence off Reddies' starting pitcher Cole Rodriguez, a three-run shot. Then Mezzenga slugged his 20th of the year to left center for a 4-0 lead.
A pair of singles and three walks helped the Mavericks add two more runs in the second. Then Magers cleared the bases with a double to right field in the fourth, giving MSU a 9-0 advantage.
Starting pitcher
Sam George held the Reddies scoreless through four but surrendered a single run in the fifth after Luke Rice singled up the middle.
Mezzenga answered with a solo home run to right field in the top of the sixth, tying him with teammate
Louis Magers with his 20
th home run. Both have eclipsed the MSU single season record set by Jordan Hart in 2019 (19).
George (8-0) finished off a scoreless seventh for the Mavericks and totaled five strikeouts, one run (unearned) and two walks. The Reddies mounted two runs in the eighth and ninth frames, but the Mavericks held on.
The top of the batting order was effective for MSU. Byrne finished 2-for-4 with four runs batted in and Magers posted one hit and four runs batted in. The Mavericks outhit the Reddies 11-8.
