LEESBURG, Fla. – The Minnesota State Mavericks remained unbeaten after securing a 4-1 victory over Grand Valley State on Saturday. A strong defensive performance and timely hitting helped the Mavericks hold off the Lakers at Pat Thomas Stadium in non-conference play.
Senior left-handed pitcher
Nathan Culley (3-0) tossed his second complete game in three starts. He allowed one earned run, seven hits, walked one and struck out eight for the Mavericks. Culley has surrendered just one earned run in 20.0 innings this spring.
The Mavericks struck first in the bottom of the second inning when
Zach Stroh singled and scored on a pair of Grand Valley State errors, giving Minnesota State a 1-0 lead. The Mavericks extended their lead in the third, capitalizing on another Laker miscue. Stroh delivered again with an RBI double, pushing the lead to 3-0.
Grand Valley State responded in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly, cutting the deficit to 3-1. It was the only run the Lakers managed, as Minnesota State's pitching staff locked in to keep them off the board for the remainder of the game.
The Mavericks added an insurance run in the fifth inning when Stroh scored on a sacrifice fly by
Brady Jurgella, making it a 4-1 game. From there, the Minnesota State bullpen shut the door, allowing just three hits over the final four innings to seal the win.
With the victory, Minnesota State (9-0, 8-0 NSIC) is the only team in NCAA Division II baseball still undefeated.
