CLERMONT, Fla. --- Minnesota State suffered its first two losses in its Florida trip Thursday as the Mavericks fell to Bentley 4-1 and Saint Martin's 6-5.
MSU now owns a 14-10 record on the season.
Minnesota State added a pair of games to its Florida trip and will now take on Indiana, Pa. and Purdue Northwest on Friday in Clermont, Fla. First pitches are scheduled for 8:00 a.m. (CST) and 10:15 a.m. (CST), respectively.
Minnesota State vs. Bentley Recap
Minnesota State began the day with a 4-1 loss to the Bentley Falcons.
Senior
Brianna Stone (2-3) took the loss as she gave up three runs on six hits in 4.2 innings pitched. Maddie Picket (1-0) earned the win as she gave up one run on three hits in 5.1 innings. Riley Piromalli picked up the save as she allowed just one hit in 1.2 innings.
After four scoreless innings to open the game, the Bentley offense broke through in the bottom of the fifth. The Falcons recorded five hits in the inning, including an RBI-single from Jordan Krause and a two-run single by Maddie Baker, to put Bentley up 3-0.
The Mavericks responded in the top of the sixth as junior
Gianna Lara doubled to left center with one out. Sophomore
Kurstyn Patnode, who pinch ran for Lara, then moved up to third on a ground out before senior
Ella Schulz drove her in with a double of her own. Bentley was able to get the final out to end the threat.
Bentley took advantage of two hits and a Maverick error in the bottom of the sixth to get one more run across to go back up by three at 4-1. Piromalli then set the Mavericks down in order in the top of the seventh to secure the 4-1 win.
Freshman
Carly Kimmes drew two walks, while Patnode scored the lone run for the Mavericks.
Minnesota State vs. Saint Martin's Recap
Minnesota State finished the day with a 6-5 loss to the Saint Martin's Saints.
Junior
Sailor Hall (6-3) took the loss as she gave up six runs, five earned, in 6.2 innings. Chloe Leverington (9-1) earned the win in relief as she allowed no runs in two innings.
The Saints jumped in front right away in the top of the first as their leadoff hitter got on base via an error, before Heather Ebner homered to right field to put Saint Martin's up 2-0. The Mavericks answered right back in their half of the inning with three runs as they took advantage of three walks and two stolen bases, before a two-run single by sophomore
Izzy Hycnar put the Mavericks up 3-2.
The top of the second saw the Saints respond with two more runs to retake the lead at 4-3. A single and a walk put runners on second and first with two gone, before a double from Ashley Goodale drove in two to put Saint Martin's back in front.
Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth, freshman
Carly Kimmes led off the inning with a single to right, before a one-out triple from freshman
Finley Anderson drove her in to tie the game at 4-4. Senior
Ella Schulz then drove in Anderson with a sacrifice fly to center as the Mavericks finished the inning leading 5-4.
MSU carried its 5-4 lead into the seventh, but two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases for the Saints with two outs. Haley Agena then drew another walk to score in the tying run, before a single by Jules Detrinidad drove in the go ahead run.
The Mavericks were then set down in order in the bottom of the seventh as Saint Martin's claimed the 6-5 win.
Anderson scored two runs for the Mavericks, while Hycnar drove in two. Hycnar also recorded two hits.
