Mavericks Stay Perfect in Florida with Wins over Oilers and Knights

CLERMONT, Fla. --- Minnesota State improved to 8-0 on its Florida trip Wednesday as the Mavericks bested Findlay 6-5 and Queens College 9-1 (5 innings).

Minnesota State now owns a 14-8 record on the season.

Minnesota State vs. Findlay Recap

Minnesota State began the day with a 6-5 win over Findlay.

Junior Sailor Hall (6-2) earned the win as she threw 4.0 innings, giving up just one run on six hits, while striking out three. Alexys Antal (2-2) took the loss as she allowed five runs on six hits, in 3.1 innings. Senior Brianne Stone threw three shutout innings in relief.

The Mavericks struck first in the bottom of the first as freshman Carly Kimmes reached on an error before a one-out triple from freshman Finley Anderson drove in Kimmes to put MSU up 1-0. The Oilers managed to tie the game in the top of the second, but senior Marina Carter led off the bottom of the third with a solo home run to center field to put the Mavericks back in front 2-1. Carter's home run was the first of her career with MSU.

The bottom of the fourth saw the Mavericks add four more runs to increaser their lead to 6-1. Sophomore Izzy Hycnar drove in the first run of the inning with a double to center field, before a double from senior Cheyenne Behrends drove in three more with two outs.

Findlay would not go quietly however as it responded with four runs of its own to get back within one of the Mavericks at 6-5 in the top of the fifth. A fielder's choice, a single and a pair of sacrifice hits drove in UF's four runs before a strikeout from senior relief pitcher Brianne Stone ended the inning.

The top of sixth saw the Oilers open the inning with a pair of hits as runners made it to second and third with nobody out. Stone got the first out via a pop up to second, before a lineout from UF's Alexys Antal doubled off Kayla Dykin on second base to get the Mavericks out of the jam.

Findlay got another runner on base in the top of the seventh with two outs, but Stone was able to strikeout the final batter to lock down the 6-5 win.

Anderson finished the game with two hits, while Kimmes and Carter each scored two runs. Behrends drove in a game-high three runs also.
 
Minnesota State vs. Queens College Recap

The Mavericks finished the day with a 9-1 win over Queens College in five innings.

Stone (2-2) picked up the win as she threw the first two innings for the Mavericks, allowing just one hit and striking out two. Sophomore Chloe Brandt threw two innings and allowed one run in relief, while freshman Hannah Tong threw one inning and issued one walk. Sam Voskinarian (0-3) took the loss as she gave up seven runs, six earned, in 2.2 innings.

MSU jumped out quickly in the first inning as it tallied five runs on three hits. A sacrifice fly by Tong brought in the first run, before a single by junior Gianna Lara scored two more. Hycnar then drove in Lara with an RBI-double, before scoring herself on an error by the first baseman.

With two outs in the top of the second, Anderson tripled to right center and went on to score via a triple by Tong. Tong then came in to score via a wild pitch before the Knights ended the inning down 7-0.

Freshman Ysabel Lerma and Anderson each drove in another run in the top of the third to put MSU up 9-0. Queens managed to get a run in the bottom of the third, but the Knights would get no closer as Brandt and Tong combined to leave three runners stranded on base in the last two innings as the Mavericks locked down the 9-1 win.

Tong and Lara both finished with two runs batted in, while Anderson led the team with three hits. Anderson also scored two runs, along with Behrends.

Minnesota State continues its season on Thursday as it takes on Bentley at 10:30 a.m. and Saint Martin's at 12:45 in Clermont, Fla.
