WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Minnesota State Mavericks (10-1) powered past Point Park (8-5) with a commanding 14-2 win in seven innings at the RussMatt Central Florida Tournament.
Despite an early deficit, Minnesota State quickly seized control, using a five-run second inning to take the lead before piling on the offense and shutting down the Pioneers the rest of the way.
Point Park struck first in the bottom of the first, grabbing a 2-0 lead on an RBI double. The Mavericks wasted no time responding, erupting for five runs in the top of the second. After an error put MSU on the board, Brandon Vlcko delivered an RBI single, followed by Brady Jurgella's two-run triple to give the Mavericks the lead. A sacrifice fly from Zach Stroh capped off the rally, making it 5-2.
MSU continued to build on its lead, adding four more runs in the fourth thanks to a mix of timely hitting and defensive miscues by Point Park. The Mavericks broke the game wide open in the fifth, highlighted by Jake Berkland's RBI double and a two-run homer from Louis Magers, extending the lead to 14-2.
After the first inning, Minnesota State's pitching staff took control, holding Point Park scoreless for the remainder of the game while allowing just a handful of hits.
The Mavericks wrap up play at the RussMatt Central Florida Tournament with matchups against Wayne State on Tuesday and Wednesday.
