BISMARCK, N.D. - Minnesota State tennis began Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play with a win Saturday over Minnesota State University Moorhead 6-1 at Mandan Tennis Center. The Mavericks (2-0, 1-0 NSIC) swept doubles competition, then won five of six singles positions to stay undefeated. 

Freia Lawrence and Avery Stilwell won their second straight match at No. 1 doubles over Shaelyn Johnson and Luzmary Diaz 6-1. McKenna DeMarce and Elizabeth Felderman downed Tiannah Gu and Katryna Hansen at No. 2 doubles without dropping a game.

In singles, Lawrence won in straight set at the top of the lineup over Johnson 6-4, 6-3. DeMarce and Felderman needed three sets to win at No. 3 and No. 5 respectively, but both prevailed, including Felderman's in a third set tiebreaker 7-0.

"I'm really happy with how our doubles is looking right now," said head coach Matt Hokanson. "We played with great chemistry and brought a ton of energy. In singles, we battled through to win some really close matches and showed a ton of match toughness to pull those out."

The Mavericks continue the road trip at University of Mary on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 12:30 p.m. at Mandan Tennis Center. The match will be streamed live online.
