MANAKTO, Minn- Minnesota State (11-8-1, 5-8-1) edged St. Cloud State (7-12-1, 3-10-1), 3-2 in overtime at the Mayo Clinic HSEC on Saturday to even the weekend series. Kamyrn Van Batavia notched the game-winning goal and the Mavericks outshot St. Cloud State 31-25.
The first period began with Minnesota State taking control early. The Mavericks struck quickly, as
Zoe Lopez scored at 19:11 with assists from
Makayla Moran and
Ava Guillemette, giving them a 1-0 lead.
Mercury Bischoff scored at 19:30, assisted by
Taylor Otremba and
Kianna Roeske, giving the Mavericks an early momentum boost in the second period. The Huskies responded with a power-play goal by Avery Farrell at 2:49. The period concluded with Minnesota State leading 2-1. St. Cloud State tied the game with a goal from Sofianna Sundelin in the third period.
The team traded scoring chances in overtime, including a pad save by MSU goaltender
Hailey Hansen on a 2-on-1 rush.
Kamryn Van Batavia one-timed the game-winner at 3:10 assisted by Otremba, who spun around and backhanded it to Van Batavia in front. Hansen stopped 23 of 25 shots on goal.
The Mavericks are 6-3-1 over the past ten games, heading into the new year.
The Mavericks are back in action Jan 9 and Jan 10 as they face Minnesota for a home and home series.
