#24 Mavericks Serve Up 11 Aces in Sweep of Bemidji State

MANKATO, Minn. — The No. 24-ranked Minnesota State volleyball team (20-5, 12-5 NSIC) swept Bemidji State (7-18, 4-13 NSIC) Friday, Nov. 7th at Taylor Center. The Mavericks delivered a strong all-around performance, highlighted by 11 service aces that fueled their victory.

Junior Avery Rosenberg led the offense with 15 kills and three blocks, totaling 17 points. Jadyn Lester directed the attack with 26 assists while adding 11 digs and four kills. Middle blocker Emily Kern added nine kills with a .316 hitting percentage and three blocks. At the service line, Mary Satori recorded four aces, reaching 55 aces on the season and marking her 100th career service ace.

MSU opened the first set with a balanced attack, highlighted by Rosenberg's early kills, keeping the score tight. As the set progressed, Bemidji State pushed ahead to a 13-9 lead, but the Mavericks responded with a crucial four-point run, including a service ace from libero, Ellie Kline and a block by Kern. The teams continued trading points, with Minnesota State gaining momentum through key plays by Kern and Lester. A late push saw the Mavericks pull ahead 21-17 after a service ace by Morgan Bjella. Despite BSU rallying to tie the game at 23, Minnesota State secured the set with a decisive service ace from Kline and a final kill by Kern, closing the set 26-24 in favor of the home squad.

Minnesota State led the second set with a strong offensive showing, highlighted by significant contributions from Kern and Rosenberg. Early in the set, Satori and Rosenberg registered crucial kills to maintain a steady pace. Avery Klein and Jaelyn LaPlante also added important points, reinforcing the home team's momentum. Defensive efforts were bolstered by blocks from Kern and Lester, which stymied Bemidji State's advances. As the set progressed, Minnesota State capitalized on Bemidji State's errors, extending their lead with a series of kills and service aces delivered by the team. Minnesota State maintained control throughout the set and managed to close it out with back-to-back service aces, securing a 25-17 victory.

The Mavericks began the third set by establishing an early lead, supported by effective plays from Rosenberg and LaPlante. A quick series of kills and an attack error from Bemidji State allowed MSU to pull ahead 4-2. Klein and Rosenberg continued to shine, keeping the margin in favor of the home team. Midway through the set, Bjella's service prowess helped extend Minnesota State's advantage with two aces, contributing to a 15-7 lead. Lester facilitated the offense, notching multiple assists to Rosenberg and Kern, maintaining the home team's momentum. Minnesota State closed out the set with strong defensive play, including a block from Klein and Rosenberg. With consistent offensive contributions and defensive stops, the Mavericks concluded the set with a decisive 25-12 win.

"I'm proud of the way we adjusted midway through the first set after Bemidji came out playing so well. That shift allowed us to settle into our game and establish a rhythm on both sides of the ball," said Head Coach Corey Phelps.  "Rosenberg was lights out today and I'm looking forward to a great match tomorrow," Phelps adds. 


Minnesota State will close out its regular season home schedule on Saturday, Nov. 8, hosting No. 25 Minnesota Duluth at 2 p.m. in Taylor Center. The matchup will also serve as Senior Night, with free admission available for all fans.
