Mavericks Upend #2 Golden Gophers at Ridder Arena

MINNEAPOLIS –  Minnesota State junior forward Ava Guillemette lifted a shot from the endline into the back of the net to break a 1-1 tie and propel the Mavericks to a 3-1 victory over second-ranked Minnesota Friday evening at Ridder Arena.

The goal came at the 16:40 mark of the third period. Senior Kianna Roske then iced the game at the 19:18 mark of the third with an empty-net goal – her first of the year – to seal the win.

"I thought we played for a consistent sixty minutes," said head coach Shari Dickerman. "Our forecheck was great from the first shift and we did a good job of playing on angles and disrupting plays."

"Our defense was strong, and our forwards tracked back to our D-zone with purpose. (Goaltender) Hailey (Hansen) played another strong game between the pipes."

The Mavericks trailed 1-0 after Abbey Murphy scored for Minnesota at 12:27 of the opening period. Freshman Mercury Bischoff evened the score 1-1 four minutes later.

Murphy's tally was the only goal that Minnesota would garner on the night as Hansen turned away 39 shots, including the last 33 she faced.

"It was great to get scoring from a couple of different lines," added Dickerman. "I'm proud of the effort of our whole group and looking forward playing at home tomorrow afternoon."

Junior Kamryn Van Batavia finished with a pair of helpers while Bischoff had a goal and an assist.

Minnesota State (7-7-1, 3-7-1 WCHA) hosts Minnesota (12-3-0, 8-3-0 WCHA) at Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center Saturday at 2 p.m. to conclude the series.
