#23 Mavericks Finish Regular Season in Commanding Fashion

CROOKSTON, Minn. — The No. 23-ranked Minnesota State volleyball team (23-5, 15-5 NSIC) rolled to a straight-set sweep over Minnesota Crookston (6-22, 0-20 NSIC) on Saturday, Nov. 15 at Lysaker Gymnasium. The Mavericks set the tone early, posting a .517 hitting percentage in the opening set and maintaining control throughout the match.

"After a season full of firsts, I'm thrilled that we finished the regular season by locking up the four seed in the conference tournament but tying the program record for sweeps in a season (18) as well," said Head Coach Corey Phelps. "Great team win today!"

Avery Klein led the Mavericks with 17 kills on 28 attempts, hitting at a .607 efficiency and accumulating 18 points. Sophomore Jadyn Lester contributed significantly with 36 assists, surpassing 1000 assists for the season, and added four service aces to her tally. Libero Ellie Kline showcased her defensive capabilities by recording 20 digs over the three sets played. Avery Rosenberg was effective offensively, finishing with eight kills and a hitting percentage of .467.

Minnesota State started the opening set with steady, efficient offense to take control early. Mary Satori put the Mavericks on the board with a kill from Lester, followed by a series of kills from Klein and Rosenberg to build a 4-1 lead. Strong defense helped extend the advantage, including a block by Emily Kern and Klein that forced a Golden Eagles error. Jaelyn LaPlante and Klein added points as Minnesota State moved ahead 10-3. The Mavericks stayed in rhythm the rest of the way, with a service ace from Madisen Miller and additional kills from Lester and Klein. Minnesota State closed out the set 25-9, carrying complete control from start to finish.

The Mavericks began the second set with early momentum, starting with a kill from Rosenberg. MSU continued to find a rhythm offensively, with Klein delivering several key points and Lester efficiently directing the attack. Midway through the set, Minnesota State widened the gap with a combination of kills and blocks while capitalizing on Minnesota Crookston's errors. Defensive contributions from Kern and Addison Foor helped maintain the lead. The Golden Eagles made a brief push to tighten the score, but MSU answered with steady pressure, including a service ace from Kline. LaPlante closed the set with a kill, giving Minnesota State a 25-20 win.

MSU settled into the third set with confidence, quickly taking control behind an early kill from Ellie Voth and a block that forced an attack error. Lester connected with Klein to extend the lead, and the Mavericks added cushion with a service ace and a stretch of opponent errors. Steady offense from Voth and Klein kept MSU in front throughout the set. A short run by the opposition narrowed the gap to 19-13, but the Mavericks answered immediately. Contributions from LaPlante and Olivia Sturgis, capped by a final service ace from Lester, closed out the frame. Minnesota State claimed the set 25-17, maintaining momentum the rest of the way.

The Mavericks now set their sights on the NSIC Tournament Quarterfinal on Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 6 p.m., when they host Sioux Falls at the Taylor Center. This marks the first time in program history that the Mavericks host a portion of the NSIC Tournament.
