Mavericks Pull Away Late at Concordia-St. Paul

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Sophomore running back Sam Backer rushed for three touchdowns and No. 15 Minnesota State used a big second half to down Concordia-St. Paul, winning 47-19 Saturday afternoon at Sea Foam Stadium. It was the Mavericks' third straight victory as the team improved to 5-1 overall, 4-1 in the NSIC.

Backer (Chatfield, Minn.) netted 114 yards rushing on 21 attempts and averaged 5.4 yards per carry. Senior TreShawn Watson (Antioch, Ill.) led all wide receivers with eight catches for 116 yards, including a 27-yard connection.

In a low-scoring first half, Connor Fournier kicked a 50-yard field goal to send the Mavericks to the locker room with a 16-8 lead. Both teams started the game with punts. Then MJ Mitchell rushed for three yards into the end zone to give Concordia-St. Paul an early advantage. The Mavericks blocked the extra point attempt, but Kenny Steffen caught the ball in the end zone, resulting in an uncommon two-point conversion.

Sam Backer responded for MSU with a one-yard run, following an interception by Jefferson Mobry (third of season). Later, quarterback Maximus Sims rushed three yards to the goal line to give the Mavericks the lead 12-8. It was Sims' fourth rushing touchdown of the fall. Fournier missed a 53-yard attempt in the first quarter, then split the uprights with 18 seconds remaining.

With good field position off a Golden Bear penalty on a punt, the Mavericks converted a pair of fourth-down tries, including Backer into the endzone from the two-yard line. Fournier's extra point gave MSU a 23-8 lead with 2:45 to play in the third quarter.

Mitchell completed a pass to EJ Previlma for 59 yards for Concordia-St. Paul and Anthony Hickman found space for a catch in the endzone with 1:02 remaining in the third. CSP converted a two-point conversion as the deficit shrank to 23-16.

The Mavericks pulled away late with two Fournier field goals and Sam Backer's 18-yard touchdown run, his third of the afternoon.

The Mavericks (5-1, 4-1 NSIC) return to Mankato to host Winona State on Saturday, October 11 at 1 p.m. CT.
