MANKATO, Minn. — The No. 2-ranked Minnesota State soccer team battled Bemidji State to a 2–2 draw on Sunday afternoon at The Pitch. The result marked the first time this season that the Mavericks have allowed a goal, ending their shutout streak to start the year.
The Beavers struck early in the second minute when Katrina Barthelt capitalized to make it 1–0. Minnesota State quickly answered in the 13th minute as
Maille Mathis scored off a feed from
Reese Hilsenbeck to bring the match level at 1–1.
The Mavericks continued to apply pressure, generating several dangerous opportunities and hitting the woodwork twice, but BSU goalkeeper Sonia Alfieri kept the Beavers in it with multiple key saves.
In the 78th minute,
Amara Smith gave the Mavericks a 2–1 lead after finishing a pass from
Avery Korsching. However, Bemidji State's Barthelt struck again in the 85th minute to even the score and secure the 2–2 draw.
Minnesota State outshot Bemidji State 21–10 and held an 8–6 advantage in corner kicks.
Lauren McAlpine made three saves for the Mavericks, while Alfieri recorded eight for the Beavers.
"Disappointing result for sure, thought we deserved better based on how we played. Overall we played really well, just had a couple uncharacteristic breakdowns that got us into some trouble today." Said head coach
Brian Bahl. "I was really proud of how we battled back after going down one, not only found the equalizer but also found what we hoped would be the game winner. It's a good game for us to learn and grow from and I know our ladies will definitely do that as we move forward."
With the draw, Minnesota State moves to (9-0-2, 7-0-1 NSIC) on the season. The Mavericks will be back in action next weekend when they travel to face Concordia St-Paul on Friday, and the Mavericks will host Winona State on Sunday.
