Mavericks Tame Tigers 5-2

HAYS, Kan. – Minnesota State picked up a 5-2 victory over Fort Hays State in women's tennis Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference match at FHSU Tennis Courts.
 
The Mavericks improved to 4-2 as the Tigers dropped to 4-2. MSU began by seizing the team doubles point. Freia Lawrence and Avery Stilwell teamed to win 6-0 at No. 1 over Fiorella Mendez and Yone Pereiro. Elizabeth Felderman and McKenna DeMarce also won 6-1 at No. 3.
 
Later in singles, three matches went to super tiebreakers for the third set. At No. 1 Chiara Carnelutti fell to Irina Alfonso 6-7(6), 6-4, 10-3. Daria Podmogilnaia went the distance but also fell to FHSU's Pereiro 6-1, 7-5, 18-16 at No. 3.
 
DeMarce won a tight match at No. 6 4-6, 7-5, 10-6 over Mendez. Lawrence won in straight sets at No. 2, as did Avery Stilwell at No. 4 and Elizabeth Felderman at No. 5.

"This was a fantastic match to start our spring break trip," said head coach Tristen Bryant-Otake. "Playing regional opponents can be challenging but we were up to the challenge today. I was impressed how well we played, especially given the long travel. We came out with great energy to grab the doubles point, then we kept that level throughout singles in every match. We adapted well to the outdoor conditions and I am excited for our next match this Friday."
 
The Mavericks continue their road trip at No. 20 ranked Missouri Western State (5-0) Friday at noon at Genesis Health Club in St. Joseph, Missouri.
