ROCHESTER, Minn. – Carlton College downed Minnesota State 6-3 in women's tennis Saturday afternoon at Rochester Tennis Connection. The Knights edged MSU in three tight doubles matches, then collected wins at No. 1, No. 5, and No. 6 singles in the matchup between non-conference foes.

Defending NSIC player of the week
Chiara Carnelutti came closest to victory at No. 1 doubles, with partner
Avery Stilwell but came up short 7-6(2). Carnelutti then fell at No. 1 singles to Amelia Asfaw 7-5, 6-1.
Â
Freia Lawrence was a winner at No. 2 singles 6-1, 5-7, 10-6 over Mary Hose and
Daria Podmogilnaia defeated Mariam Nechiporuk at No. 3 in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. Stillwell took a third set tiebreak 4-6, 6-2, 11-9 at No. 4 in come-from-behind fashion, but
Elizabeth Felderman and
McKenna DeMarce fell at No. 5 and No. 6.
"The girls did their best today," said head coach
Tristen Bryant-Otake. "We knew Carlton was going to be tough. We came out a bit flat for doubles and couldn't get the momentum going. We stepped up better in singles and just fell a bit short in a few key matches. Now we have to look ahead to a challenging few spring matches in Kansas and Missouri."
Â
The Mavericks (3-2, 2-1 NSIC) continue at Fort Hays State on Wednesday, March 6 at 1 p.m. in Hays, Kansas. Carleton College (6-0, 4-0 MIAC) dropped a point for the first time this season to the Mavericks but stayed undefeated.
