Box Score MANKATO, Minn. – Minnesota State (8-9-1, 4-9-1 WCHA) closed out the weekend on a high note against Bemidji State (3-14-1, 2-12-0 WCHA), securing their second victory Saturday afternoon at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center 5-3.
The Mavericks started strong, with
Jamie Nelson scoring her first goal of the game during a power play just eight minutes in, assisted by
JuliAnna Gazdik and
Claire Vekich. Nelson struck again six minutes later, this time unassisted, giving Minnesota State a 2-0 lead. Bemidji State responded late in the first period, narrowing the gap to 2-1 heading into the second.
Five minutes into the second period,
Claire Vekich extended the Mavericks' lead to 3-1 with a goal assisted by
Alexis Paddington and
JuliAnna Gazdik. Bemidji State's Morgan Smith answered back in the 12th minute, scoring her second goal of the game and later tying it up.
The Mavericks regained momentum in the third period when Mackenzie Bourgerie found the back of the net, assisted by Langseth and Seifert. With one minute remaining, Vekich sealed the victory by scoring her second goal of the night on an empty net, bringing the final score to 5-3.
Smith finished with a hat trick for Bemidji State. The Mavericks outshot the Beavers 29-13.
The Mavericks will return to action on the road against Lindenwood on January 3rd and 4th.
