Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Mavericks, Tommies Locked 1-1 in OT, MSU Takes Shootout

MANKATO, Minn. – No. 16 Minnesota State men's hockey played to a 1-1 overtime tie with St. Thomas Saturday night before Brian Carrabes helped the Mavericks win in a shootout at Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center in CCHA competition. Brett Moravec scored for MSU in regulation and Alex Tracy finished with 27 saves.

The Mavericks (7-4-1, 2-1-1 CCHA) are 5-0-1 since October 19 and improved to 4-2-1 at home.

Like Friday night, the Tommies opened the scoring in the first period. Ryder Donovan corralled the puck in the corner and banked it off Tracy in the crease. The bounce careened right to Jake Bracchini for a one-timer inside the left hash, his first marker of the year. UST took the 1-0 edge into the first break.

The Mavericks countered in the second period. Carrabes and Mason Wheeler played catch in the offensive left corner, then sent a shot to the front of the goal, where Moravec batted the deflection near the back post for his fifth of the season. The play happened at 9:53 of the second period and it was Moravec's third straight game with a goal.

Both teams generated chances to score in the third period and Moravec nearly won it for the Mavericks in overtime on a breakaway chance but UST goaltender Jake Sibell turned his shot aside. In the shootout, both teams scored twice on three attempts before Tracy shut the door on Cooper Gay's forehand with a blocker save and Carrabes cashed in as MSU's fourth shooter.

Neither team converted on a single power play opportunity. Will Hillman won 14 of 19 faceoffs. Evan Murr blocked a team-high four shots. The Mavericks won Friday night 5-3 in Mendota Heights against the Tommies.

Minnesota State welcomes Northern Michigan (1-9-0, 0-4-0) for a CCHA series Nov. 15-16 before heading on the road to face Michigan Tech the following week.
