KANSAS CITY, Mo. --- #1 Minnesota State wrapped up the Central Region Challenge with an 85-68 loss vs. #10 Washburn in Kansas City Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, MSU drops to 1-3 on the season. With the win, WU improves to 2-0 on the season.
"We got out toughed by a really good Washburn team," head coach
Matt Margenthaler said. "We look to get back to practice next week and get better. This team will be better because of our tough pre-conference schedule."
The first eight minutes of the game saw four lead changes as the Mavericks and Ichabods were tied at 12-12. Senior
Harrison Braudis notched six of MSU's 12 points during the opening stretch.
The game still remained within a score after a three pointer from senior
Justin Eagins brought the score to 26-23 in favor of WU, but the final 2:46 of the half saw the Ichabods outscore the Mavericks 10-4 to increase their lead to 36-27 as the game went into halftime.
Braudis led the Mavericks in the first half with 10 points, while Eagins tallied five points and two assists.
As a team, MSU shot 30.0% from the field in the first half and 7-of-8 (.875) from the free throw line.
Andrew Orr led the Ichabods in the first half with 10 points, while Brayden Shorter notched nine points and six rebounds.
As a team, WU shot 48.5% from the field in the opening stanza.
The first 10 minutes of the second half saw the Ichabods outscore the Mavericks 24-16 as they increased their lead to 60-43 with 10:09 to go. Sophomore
Caden Kirkman led the Mavericks during that stretch with nine points, while Jacob Hanna paced WU with 10 points.
The Mavericks managed to get back within 11 points of the Ichabods at 77-66 with 3:31 to go, but that was as close as MSU would get as WU finished the game on an 8-2 run to lock down their 85-68 win.
Braudis led the Mavericks with 19 points and five assists, while Eagins tallied 14 points and five assists also. Kirkman added 11 points of his own, while junior
Malcom Jones notched 10 points and seven rebounds.
As a team, MSU shot 36.8% from the field, including an 8-of-34 (.235) showing from three point range. The Mavericks connected on 10-of-11 (.909) attempts from the line as well.
Orr led Washburn with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Sorter tallied 17 points and eight rebounds. Jacob Hanna added 17 points as well.
As a team, Washburn shot 46.3% from the field. The Ichabods also recorded 48 rebounds.
Minnesota State continues its season on Saturday, Nov. 16, as it takes on Southwest Minnesota State in a nonconference game at R/A Facility in Marshall, Minn. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
