Tracy Backstops Mavericks to Road Sweep

HOUGHTON, Mich. – Minnesota State goaltender Alex Tracy stymied Michigan Tech with 32 saves and the Mavericks picked up a CCHA road sweep with a 3-1 victory Saturday night at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

Ralfs Bergmanis, Zach Krajnik and Adam Eisele pitched in a goal apiece. Campbell Cichosz played strong on defense and MSU killed all seven minor penalties to improve to 10-4-2 overall, 5-1-2 CCHA. The No. 17 ranked Mavericks head home next weekend at the atop the conference standings.

The teams played to a scoreless first 20 minutes, with a pair of empty power play chances each. Jack Works broke the deadlock at 5:17 of the second period. After a minor penalty expired, the Huskies maintained offensive zone possession. Rylan Brown fired a high shot off Tracy's shoulder and Works poked the rebound through the crease.

Krajnik evened the score five minutes later on a shorthanded breakaway, assisted by Eisele. Eisele banked the puck into the neutral zone. Krajnik corralled it and wristed a shot over goaltender Derek Mullahy's blocker.

Each team's top line assembled a dominating shift in succession in the third period. Then Bergmanis wired a point shot through traffic and past the goal line for a 2-1 lead at 12:33. Eisele made it 3-1 less than a minute later following a turnover when he carefully slid a forehand around Mullahy in the crease.

The Huskies (6-4-0, 4-2-0 CCHA) outshot the Mavericks 33-18 and held a 31-19 edge in faceoffs. Eisele led Minnesota State with three shots on goal while Logan Morrell accumulated six for MTU.

"I was happy for the guys to complete the weekend," said head coach Luke Strand. "Michigan Tech is a tough place to play on the road and knowing that break is next week, the guys did a terrific job finishing the weekend correctly. They earned a little time to catch a breath."

The Mavericks won 5-2 Friday night in Houghton and improved to 5-0-2 over their last seven games. Tracy totaled 53 saves for a .946 save percentage on the weekend. The Chicago, Ill. native currently ranks third in Division I save percentage and goals against average.

Minnesota State welcomes Bowling Green Dec. 6-7 at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center.
