Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Mavericks Deadlock Wildcats Saturday

MANKATO, Minn. – Minnesota State tied Northern Michigan 1-1 (NMU won shootout) Saturday night in CCHA men's hockey at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center. The Mavericks won 3-0 on Friday night in the series opener.

Will Diamond scored to tie the game for the Wildcats at 10:27 of the third period and despite a heavy advantage in time of possession in overtime, the Mavericks were unable to grab the deciding goal.

Minnesota State did score first in front of 4,557 home fans. Will Hillman collected a loose puck in the neutral zone, skated across the line and fired a wrist shot over the glove of Ryan Ouellette for his second goal of the weekend. The even-strength marker came unassisted at 7:20 of the first period.

MSU also generated chances in the second stanza. Brian Carrabes rang a puck off the crossbar at the midway point with a long shot and Josh Groll zinged a low forehand around a defender, which required a strong right pad save from Ouellette.

MSU controlled play in the waning minutes of the period but came up empty on their first power play and left for the locker room leading 1-0. The Mavericks led 17-13 in shots on goal after 40 minutes.

Neither team converted on a single power play opportunity in the third period and the Jakub Altrichter was only goal scorer in the three-player shootout for NMU.

The Mavericks totaled 30 shots on goal and Alex Tracy made 21 saves on 22 shots. Carrabes finished with a team-high six shots on goal and Hillman won 10 of 15 faceoffs.

Minnesota State (8-4-2, 3-1-2 CCHA) heads north to Michigan Tech Friday and Saturday night at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. Northern Michigan (1-10-1, 0-5-1) continues CCHA play at Augustana.
