MANKATO, Minn. – No. 7 Minnesota State soccer (13-1-5, 11-0-3 NSIC) extended their unbeaten streak with a commanding 2-0 victory over Wayne State (7-7-5, 6-5-4 NSIC) on Monday afternoon at The Pitch in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference quarterfinals.
The top seeded Mavericks took an early lead with
Anna Van Wyngarden scoring just six minutes into the match—her second goal of the season—as her shot slipped past Wayne State's goalkeeper, with an assist from
Kelsey Heller.
The Mavericks didn't stop there. In the 28th minute of the first half,
Amara Smith added a second goal, marking her third of the season with an assist from
Kiera Laney.
Minnesota State controlled much of the game offensively, putting up twelve shots on goal, while the No. 8 seeded Wildcats managed five.
With the win, the Mavericks advanced to the NSIC Tournament semifinals and will host No. 5 seed UMary this Friday at 1 p.m., back at The Pitch.
