Mankato, Minn. --- No. 7 Minnesota State (4-1-1) took down Concordia-St. Paul (2-3-1) by a final of 1-0 courtesy of more late heroics from freshman
Maddix Archer at Seafoam Stadium Sunday.
Archer found the back of the net in the 89th minute for her second game-winning goal of the weekend. The Brookings, South Dakota native is now tied with senior
Allie Williams for second on the team in goals with two.
Pioneering the Mavericks' last-minute push, senior
Libby Spangler launched a dime to Archer's foot collecting her second assist of the season.
In the 60th minute, senior
Mackenzie Rath collected a shot from CSP's Sophia Haase earning her 200th career save as a Maverick. The Pierre, South Dakota native is currently fifth in MSU all-time saves behind
Molly McGough (2011-14). Rath earned her 27th career shutout to go with her 34th career win this afternoon.
Head coach
Brian Bahl after the game: "We struggled to be us in the first half. We were far too passive and it gave too much of the ball to Concordia.
In the second half, we were able to improve on our pressure and did a much better job of compacting the field, allowing us to keep our attack engaged in Concordia's defensive half for the majority of that second half. We were finally able to capitalize and find one late to get the win.
We talk all the time about keeping our composure, staying together as a group and finding a way to get the job done. This group has really bought into that philosophy. Super proud of them and happy to see them rewarded for a great second half.
We have an incredible group of ladies…every player on our roster has worked so hard since day one this season. That daily commitment to continuing to raise our bar has made us so much tougher and has prepared us very well for game days.
We're going to keep getting better and deeper in these coming weeks. I'm excited about this team. Showing signs of being very special."
No. 7 Minnesota State is back in action on Friday when they travel to the University of Mary to take on the Marauders at 3:00 p.m.
