BEMIDJI, Minn. --- The Minnesota State softball team picked up a pair of five-inning shutouts Friday afternoon as the Mavericks defeated Bemidji State by the scores of 8-0 and 9-0.
With the wins, MSU improves to 21-13 on the season, including a 10-6 NSIC record. With the losses, BSU drops to 14-18, including a 3-7 conference record.
Game 1 Recap
The Mavericks took game one by the score of 8-0 in five innings.
Junior
McKayla Armbruster (12-7) threw a perfect game for the Mavericks as she set down all 15 batters she faced, including five strikeouts. Kyla Damerow (5-9) took the loss as she allowed five runs, one earned, in 1.2 innings.
MSU scored five runs on four hits in the second inning. Sophomore
Emma Dennison notched a two-run double, while junior
Kylie Sullivan posted a one-run double of her own. Freshman
Ava Smithson drove in two runs with a single as well.
The Mavericks added three more runs via the long ball as Sullivan, junior
Madi Newman and senior
Sydney Nielsen each recorded a solo home run to put the Mavericks up 8-0 by the end of the fifth inning. Armbruster would then set the final three BSU hitters down in order to secure the five-inning victory.
Sullivan finished with three hits, two RBI and two runs scored. Smithson and Dennison each drove in two runs as well.
Game 2 Recap
Minnesota State finished the day with a 9-0 win in five innings in game two.
Junior
Kacy Nickerson (4-3) earned the win as she allowed just one run in four shutout innings. Stella Dolan (8-7) took the loss as she allowed seven runs in 1.1 innings.
The Mavericks jumped out in front 3-0 right away in the top of the first. Sullivan notched a solo home run down the left field line, before Newman recorded a two-run home run of her own.
MSU would then score six runs on six hits in the top of the second to go up 9-0. Sullivan and junior
Ellie Tallman each notched RBI-singles, while Smithson drove in two more with a single up the middle. Newman brought in another run with a sacrifice fly, before sophomore
Cheyenne Behrends scored via a wild pitch.
BSU managed just one base runner through the final three innings as the Mavericks locked down the 9-0 win.
Newman recorded three RBI, while Sullivan posted two RBI and scored two runs.
Minnesota State wraps up its road trip on Sunday as it takes on Minnesota Crookston. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
