CROOKSTON, Minn. --- The Minnesota State softball team split its road doubleheader against Minnesota Crookston Sunday afternoon as it fell in game one 16-13, before winning game two 7-0.
MSU now owns a 22-14 record, including an 11-7 NSIC record. UMC now owns a 14-23 record, including a 2-10 conference record.
Game 1 Recap
The Golden Eagles defeated the Mavericks 16-13 in game one.
Brianne Stone (1-1) took the loss as she allowed five runs, three earned, in relief. Jenna Parfeniuk (1-0) picked up the win as she allowed three runs in two innings of relief. Junior
McKayla Armbruster got the no decision for the Mavericks. Armbruster had set down 41 consecutive batters until UMC's two-out single in the bottom the second inning.
The Mavericks got things going right away in the bottom of the first as they notched six runs on five hits. Sophomore
Cheyenne Behrends notched a two-run home run, while freshman
Gianna Lara recorded a three-run home run. Freshman
Ava Smithson also drove in a run with an RBI-single.
In the second inning, junior
Ellie Tallman drove in junior
Kylie Sullivan with a ground out to second base to put MSU up 7-0. MSU would then add three more in the top of the fifth including one via an RBI-double from junior
Madi Newman to put the Mavericks up 10-0.
UMC got on the board in the bottom of the fifth as it tallied eight runs on five hits to cut MSU's lead to 10-8. Maddie Shwaluk notched a grand slam, while Alina Avalos drove in two more with an RBI-single.
The Golden Eagles rallied for eight runs in the sixth inning to take a 16-10 lead. Whitnee Curry and Dana Zarn each recorded a home run in the inning, while Paige Shwaluk drove in two with a double.
The Mavericks managed to get three runs back in the top of the seventh, including a two-run single from Sullivan, but they would get no closer as the Golden Eagles hung on to the 16-13 win.
Newman recorded four hits in game one, while Lara posted three hits and three RBI.
Game 2 Recap
The Mavericks finished the day with a 7-0 win over the Golden Eagles in game two.
Armbruster (13-7) earned the win as she allowed just two hits, while striking out 10, in the complete game shutout. Evie Stuck (1-7) took the loss as she allowed four runs, three earned, in six innings.
Three home runs would put the Mavericks up 4-0 by the fourth inning. Smithson notched a two-run home run in the bottom of the second, before Newman notched a solo home run to center field in the third inning. Smithson then added her second home run of the game with a solo shot to left field.
The Mavericks added three more runs in the top of the seventh to increase their lead to 7-0. Sophomore
Emma Dennison recorded a two-run single, before senior
Sydney Nielsen drove in the third run of the inning with a single of her own.
Smithson finished with two home runs and three RBI, while Tallman recorded three hits.
Minnesota State returns home on Wednesday for a pair of games against the Sioux Falls Cougars. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
