Minnesota State Poaches Peacocks with Doubleheader Sweep

Mankato, Minn. -- Minnesota State (24-7, 14-2 NSIC) took care of Upper Iowa (11- 19, 7-12 NSIC) by finals of 5-2 and 2-1.  

Freshman Matthew Fleischhacker led off the top of the first staring down a two-run deficit. The first-year infielder drew his 18th walk to set up junior Jackson Hauge for an RBI double to left field.  

Junior Adam Schneider would then punch home Hauge with an RBI single for his 14th RBI on the season tying the game at two.  

The Mavericks would break the tie in the bottom of the sixth off a sophomore Aidan Byrne sacrifice fly scoring junior Mikey Gottschalk.  

The Mavericks would add two more to seal the first game of the doubleheader 5-2.  

Freshman Louis Magers (2-0) got the win for the Mavericks going six innings while allowing two runs on five hits.  

Senior Jack Zigan notched two saves this afternoon earning his third and fourth save on the season.  

Sam Marhefke (0-2) got tagged with the loss going two and two-third innings while allowing three runs on four hits. 

The Mavericks were able to fight off the Peacocks in the second game of the doubleheader by a final of 2-1.  

The Mavericks found offensive success in the bottom of the fourth started by a sophomore Brock Johnson one-out single. Johnson managed to advance to third with the help of a Gottschalk single and a sophomore Zach Stroh walk. Junior Hunter Ranweiler pushed Johnson across for the first tally of the game off a bases-loaded walk.  

The next inning, Hauge managed to work his way on with his 20th walk of the year to then advance to third on a sophomore Aidan Byrne single and Schneider hit-by-pitch.  

Sophomore Brock Johnson took advantage and managed to score Hauge on a sacrifice fly to right field.  

Minnesota State would hang on to win 2-1 to sweep Upper Iowa in its midweek doubleheader.  

Junior Taisei Yahiro earns the win for the Mavericks going six and one-third innings allowing one run on four hits while striking out 11 batters. 

Gabe Olson (0-1) took the loss for the Peacocks going three and one-third innings allowing one run on three hits.  

The Mavericks are back in action Friday as they take on the Augustana Vikings at Bowyer for game one of their series doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
