DULUTH, Minn. --- Minnesota State saw its season come to end Saturday evening in the second round of the NCAA Tournament as the Mavericks fell to the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs 86-70.
With the loss, MSU finishes its season with a 26-5 record. With the win, UMD improves to 29-3. The Bulldogs will take on Missouri Southern State in the regional championship game on Monday.
The first quarter saw a few lead changes as neither team led by more than seven points. UMD was able to build a 16-9 lead with 4:35 to go in the opening stanza, but an 11-4 run which included four points from sophomore
Destinee Bursch tied the score at 20-20 with 1:53 to go in the opening quarter. The Bulldogs would regain the lead and go up 25-21 by the end of the first quarter.
The first part of the second quarter saw the score stay within two points. There were four lead changes but with just less than five minutes to go in the second quarter the Bulldogs held a 31-31 lead. UMD would eventually carry a 40-37 lead into the locker room
Bursch led the Mavericks in the first half with 10 points and four rebounds. Junior
Joey Batt tallied six points also. As a team, MSU shot 34.4% from the field in the first half.
Brooke Olson led UMD with 20 points and eight rebounds in the first half. As a team, UMD shot 48.1% from the field in the first half.
With just 3:43 to go a pair of free throws from freshman
Ava Stier brought the Mavericks back to within six of the Bulldogs, but UMD would finish the quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 60-45 lead at the end of the third quarter.
The Mavericks managed to get back within 10 points of the Bulldogs at 69-59 with 7:19 to go in the game but they would get no closer as UMD went on to win the game 86-70.
Bursch finished with a team-leading 19 points and five rebounds, while freshman
Natalie Bremer tallied 12 points. Junior
Taylor Theusch added 11 points and six assists also.
As a team, MSU shot 34.4% from the field while passing out 14 assists.
Olson led all scorers with 43 points and 14 rebounds as she connected on 16-of-20 shots from the field. Taya Hakamaki recorded 13 points also.
As a team, UMD shot 55.1% from the field. The Bulldogs also cashed on 27-of-29 (.931) shots from the free throw line.
