SIOUX FALLS, S.D. --- #11 Minnesota State kept things rolling Monday afternoon in the semifinals of the NSIC Tournament as the Mavericks defeated Southwest Minnesota State 100-82.
With the win, MSU improves to 25-3 on the season. With the loss, SMSI finishes its season with a 19-11 record. This marks the second time in team history that the Mavericks have advanced to the finals of the NSIC Tournament, with the first time coming during the 2012-13 season.
The Mavericks wasted no time jump out to an early lead as they led 10-4 three minutes into the first quarter. MSU would continue to add to its lead as it went up by 10 points at 22-12 with 2:54 to go in the quarter, but the Mustangs would finish the quarter on an 11-0 run to take a 23-22 lead to close out the first quarter.
Minnesota State jumped right back out in front in the second quarter as it went on a 12-6 run in the first five minutes to take a 34-29 lead. The Mavericks would lead by as many as eight points in the closing minutes of the first half, but a last-second basket by the Mustangs would cut MSU's lead to 48-43 as both teams went into the locker room.
Junior
Joey Batt led MSU in the first half with 12 points, while sophomore
Destinee Bursch added 10 points. As a team, MSU shot 52.8% from the field in the first half.
Sam Wall led all scorers in the first half with 17 points. As a team, the Mustangs shot 56.7% from the field in the opening stanza.
SMSU managed to outscore the Mavericks 10-4 in the first four minutes of the third quarter to take a 53-52. MSU would respond with a 19-10 run to close out the third quarter with a 71-63 lead. Freshman
Natalie Bremer scored seven of MSU's 19 points during that stretch.
The Mavericks kept the pressure on throughout the fourth quarter as they connected on 12-of-18 (.667) shots from the field, en route to claiming the 100-82 win.
Batt led the Mavericks with 20 points, while Bremer finished with 17 points, which included a 9-of-9 showing from the line. Bursch finished with 15 points also, while sophomore
Emily Russo tallied 12 points and five rebounds.
As a team, MSU shot 55.6% from the field as it notched an NSIC Tournament record 40 field goals. MSU also cashed in on 17-of-19 (.895) shots from the line. The Mavericks also scored 26 points off of 17 SMSU turnovers.
SMSU was led by Wall who scored 21 points. Bri Stoltzman notched 20 points and six rebounds also.
As a team, the Mustangs shot 50.0% from the field, including a 10-of-25 (.400) showing from three point range.
Minnesota State takes on #9 Minnesota Duluth in the NSIC Tournament Championship game on Tuesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m., at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D.
