Minnesota State Tops #21 Missouri Southern in High Scoring Affair

Joplin, Mo. --- Minnesota State (2-1, 0-0 NSIC) took down #21 Missouri Southern with a 9-7 final Sunday morning at Warren Turner Field. The high-scoring affair saw a combined 16 runs on 26 hits.
The visiting Mavericks found success early against Missouri Southern from the lack of fielding consistency from the Lions who gave up four errors in today's game.
Junior Ryan Friedges reached on a throwing error in the first inning allowing Sophomore Brock Johnson to touch home giving the Mavericks the early lead.
Later in the third, Sophomore Brock Johnson's sacrifice fly drove in Sophomore Aidan Bryne to add the Mavericks' third tally of the day.
Junior Mikey Gottschalk got his big day started in the top of the five driving home two with a single through the right side giving the Mavericks a 5-3 lead.
In the following inning, Junior Ryan Wickman clobbered a solo shot down the left-field line for his first homer on the season increasing the Mavericks' margin to three.
Gottschalk continued his hot streak as he doubled to left center driving in Junior Jackson Hauge for his third RBI of the day in the top of the seventh.
After MSU saw its lead dwindle to one in the eighth, Sophomore Aidan Bryne beat out an infield single scoring Freshman Matthew Fleischhacker.
Junior Nick Baker put the cherry on top in the top of the ninth doubling down the right field line bringing home Sophomore Brock Johnson giving the Mavericks a 9-7 lead.
Senior Dylan Gotto (1-0) received the win for the Mavericks going six innings of work allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out six.
Senior Jack Brown collected his first save on the season and third career save after two innings of work surrendering one run on three hits.
Missouri Southern's Owen Schnider (1-1) took the loss for the Lions going five innings allowing two earned runs on five hits while allowing three free passes.
The Mavericks travel to St. Charles, Mo. to take on the Lindenwood Lions next weekend for a three-game series.
