#13 Minnesota State Tops Winona State in Regular Season Home Finale

MANKATO, Minn. --- #13 Minnesota State picked up its 11th win at Taylor Center this season Thursday evening as the Mavericks bested Winona State 65-42.

With the win, MSU improves to 22-3, including an 18-13 NSIC record. With the loss, WSU drops to 10-17, including a 4-17 conference record. The Mavericks also secured the #1 seed for the south division in the NSIC Tournament.

Neither team led by more than five points in the first quarter as the Warriors led 18-15 after the first 10 minutes. Sophomore Destinee Bursch paced the Mavericks in the first quarter with five points, while freshman Natalie Bremer added four.

The scoring came at a premium in the second quarter as the WSU managed to take a one-point lead at 26-25 into the locker room. Bremer recorded five points for the Mavericks in the second quarter, while Bursch posted two points.

Bremer finished the first half leading the Mavericks in scoring with nine points, while Bursch notched seven points. As a team, MSU shot 36.6% from the field in the first half.

The third quarter proved to be the decisive quarter of the game as the Mavericks outscored the Warriors 23-12 to take a 48-38 lead. Bremer added eight more points to her total, while junior Joey Batt notched five points of her own.

MSU would control the game throughout the fourth quarter as the Mavericks ended the game on a 13-0 run to claim the 65-42 win.

Bremer led all scorers with 19 points, while Bursch finished with 13 points. Batt added seven points and five assists, while sophomore Molly Ihle notched six rebounds and five assists.

As a team, the Mavericks shot 46.6% from the field. The Mavericks also enjoyed a 36-25 advantage in rebounds. MSU also forced 25 WSU turnovers and scored 29 points off of them.

Lauren Fech led the Warriors with 12 points, while Ava Sergio tallied 10 points and five rebounds.

As a team, WSU shot 36.4% from the field.

Minnesota State concludes its regular season schedule on the road this Saturday as it takes on Upper Iowa. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
