Mavericks Roll in Win over UW-Parkside

MANKATO, Minn. – Minnesota State women's basketball (3-4) defeated the Rangers of UW-Parkside (1-3) at home Saturday afternoon, 98-68. Minnesota State shot a season-high from three and collected 17 offensive rebounds that resulted in 21 second chance points for the Mavericks. The win over the Rangers snaps a three-game losing streak for the Mavericks.

An early Ava Stier and-one layup and a layup from Natalie Bremer put the Mavericks up 10-5 early in the first quarter. Parkside would go on an 8-2 to take the lead over the Mavericks, 13-12. Minnesota State finished the first quarter on a 12-9 run, led by four points from Hannah Herzig. The Mavericks had a two-point lead at the end of the first quarter, 24-22.

A pair of consecutive three-pointers from Mackenzie Schweim put the Mavericks up 35-28 early in the second period. Schweim and the Mavericks dominated the second quarter, as the sophomore had six more points in a 15-8 run to end the second quarter. Minnesota State led UW-Parkside 50-36 at the end of the first half.

Minnesota State shot 42% from the floor in the first half, including 3-9 from beyond the arc and 15-21 from the charity stripe. The Rangers shot 59% in the first half, making all three of their three-pointers. The difference in the first half for the Mavericks was the offensive glass; Minnesota State had 13 offensive rebounds in the first half and 14 second chance points. The Mavericks also forced 19 first-half turnovers, scoring 25 points off those turnovers.

Three pointers from Emily Herzberg and Bailey Conrad put the Mavericks up 64-42 halfway through the third quarter. From there on out, it was a tightly contested quarter, with Minnesota State outscoring UW-Parkside the rest of the quarter 12-9. After three quarters, the Mavericks were up 76-51.

The Mavericks finished the game outscoring the Rangers 22-17 in the final quarter to secure the victory. Minnesota State shot 52.9% in the fourth quarter and 2-2 from three-point land in the fourth.

Bremer and Schweim led the Mavericks in scoring, each putting up 17 points and four rebounds in the victory over Parkside. Bremer also finished with two assists. Herzberg had 15 points including two three-pointers. Destinee Bursch led the Mavericks with four assists and corralled six rebounds. Stier was the leading rebounder for Minnesota State with seven and also contributed 11 points and two steals. Joey Batt finished with seven points, four rebounds three assists and three steals. Conrad also had three steals and three assists. Herzig finished with nine points, two steals, two assists and three rebounds.

Parkside's Paty Gallasova, Cassidy Arni and Sheridan Flauger finished with 14 points each for the Rangers. Gallasova was also the leading passer with six assists; Flauger had five assists of her own. Lillie Petersen had a team-high seven rebounds as well as eight points.

Minnesota State shot 46.5% from the field in its win against UW-Parkside, including a season-high 46.7% from beyond the arc. The Mavericks made 25 of its 32 free throw attempts. The Mavericks outrebounded the Rangers 27-23 and brought in 17 offensive rebounds, which resulted in 21 second chance points. In comparison, the Rangers scored just one second chance point against the Mavericks. Minnesota State also got a nice boost off the bench, with bench players scoring 46 points.

"Our defense continues to create great opportunities for our team," said Mavericks head coach Emilee Thiesse. "Tonight, we capitalized on creating offense from our defense and converting second chance opportunities. We truly showed how our experience and depth is a great strength of ours." Thiesse made sure to highlight the importance of this win; "This is a great momentum builder for us heading into the grueling conference schedule."

Minnesota State returns to NSIC action next weekend, facing off against Sioux Falls (2-3) Friday Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. at the Taylor Center and Southwest Minnesota State (1-4) on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
