MANKATO, Minn. – Ryland Mosley scored with six seconds remaining in overtime and Michigan Tech overcame Minnesota State 3-2 in CCHA men's hockey Friday night at Mayo Clinic Health Clinic Event Center.
Â
The Mavericks (5-5-1, 3-2-0 CCHA) scored twice to tie the contest in regulation after a quick start by the Huskies (5-6-3, 2-3-0 CCHA) allowed them to outshoot MSU 37-23 overall.
Â
The two teams conclude the series Saturday at 6:07 p.m. in Mankato.
Â
"The second half, I liked our game," said head coach
Luke Strand. "We did some good things, played more aggressive, and battled. They're a good team. The overtime part we can fix."
Â
Michigan Tech scored a pair of even-strength goals in the opening period. Mosley collected a rebound on the back door 4:45 into the game. Then Logan Pietila took advantage of a Mavericks' defensive miscue on the goal line. Waiting across the crease, Isaac Gordon posted his seventh goal of the season for the Huskies.
Â
Using a screen in front,
Luc Wilson fired a high wrist shot from between the hashmarks past goaltender Blake Pietila to cut the deficit in half at 11:36, his third marker of the season.
Brandon Koch and
Adam Eisele assisted. Michigan Tech led 14-6 in shots on goal through 20 minutes.
Â
"Given what happened last week, we didn't want to start by chasing it, but I was proud of how our guys responded. I love the fact that we didn't panic and we stayed in there to strike when we could. We battled."
Â
After a scoreless second period, the teams began the final frame 4-on-4. A holding minor to Jed Pietila gave the Mavericks a 4-on-3 power play but the home team failed to sneak the puck through on a pair of shots.
Â
Later, Steve Bellini one-timed a pass across the high slot from
Sam Morton for his first goal of the season at 12:17 of the third.
Brian Carrabes began the play by winning a puck battle along the dasher boards coming out of the corner.
Â
The Mavericks controlled the puck through the first half of overtime. Then Brendan Olson received a hooking minor near the MSU crease. The Huskies won a late faceoff and Mosley finished off the win for Michigan Tech after he took a pass from Matthew Campbell.
Â
The Mavericks finished 1-for-2 on the power play while Michigan Tech converted 1-for-4 on the man advantage.
Keenan Rancier made 34 saves in his first start of the season in goal.
Â
"I was extremely happy for Rancier," Strand said. "It's a tough go given the layoff and I thought his performance was excellent. I thought he showed determination to lean on his experience and the fact that he's been through this before. He didn't panic when goals went in early and he stood tall for us."
