ABERDEEN, S.D. ---- #10 Minnesota State battled Northern State to a 1-1 tied Friday afternoon on the road.
MSU now owns a 9-1-5 record on the season, including a 7-0-4 NSIC record. NSU now owns a 6-3-5 record, including a 5-1-5 conference record.
"It was a tough one tonight," head coach
Brian Bahl said. "I thought we really played well enough to get a better result than what we came away with.
"Still, I was proud of our ladies for battling back to at least find the tie after falling down a goal, especially when it was a first runoff play goal we have given up this year. It really could have rattled us but we stayed focused and found a way to pull on back."
Northern State broke the scoreless tie early on in the second half as Calista Kocmick scored her third goal of the season in the 48th minute to put the Wolves up 1-0.
With time running out the Mavericks finally got on the board in the 86th minute as sophomore
Anna Van Wyngarden notched her fourth goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1. Neither team could break the tie in the closing minutes as the 1-1 score held.
In total, the Mavericks outshot the Wolves 24-10, with both teams recoding eight shots on goal. Senior
Mackenzie Rath (9-1-4) made seven saves, while her counterpart Alexus Townsend (6-3-5) also made seven saves.
The Mavericks also held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
"Despite the tie, I think we grew tonight and I think this game will actually serve us well moving forward," Bahl said.
Minnesota State continues its season on the road this Sunday as it takes on the MSU Moorhead Dragons. The match is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., at Nemzek Soccer Field.
