Mankato, Minn. --- No. 15 Minnesota State blanked Wayne State by a final of 1-0 for its sixth consecutive shutout on Sunday afternoon at The Pitch.
The Mavericks jumped on the Wildcats in the first half outshooting WSC 16-3. Senior
Allie Williams notched the game's only score in the 14th minute after pressuring Wildcat defenders in the box after a failed defensive clearing. Williams took advantage of the WSC miscue notching her fourth goal of the season and her seventh game-winning career goal.
In a tightly contested matchup, the two defensive anchors senior
Libby Spangler and sophomore
Courtney Kovacs notched full-time efforts. The final horn of today's match marked Spangler's 11th full-time performance this season compared to Kovacs's eighth.
Senior
Mackenzie Rath collected her 34th career shutout to accompany her 39th career win. Rath is five wins away from overtaking
Alexa Rabune (1999-02) for second in MSU all-time wins. She is also 15 saves away from overtaking
Allison Vroman (2016-19) for the MSU all-time career saves record.
Head coach
Brian Bahl after the game: "I liked the opportunities we created in the first half today and how we limited Wayne's space. In the second half, we allowed the game to get too wide open as we left too much space in our lines.
In the end, I'm happy we were able to pick up two wins this weekend, but we need to be able to finish our chances at a higher percentage than what we are. I know we're capable of being much better."
The Mavericks are back in action as they travel to Northern State on Friday to take on the Wolves at 3 p.m.
