Schuck Multi & Open Has Mavericks Leading After Day One

Mankato, Minn. --- The #23 Minnesota State Men's Indoor Track & Field team stands in first place with 46 points after the opening day of competition in the two-day Mark Schuck Open & Multi presented by North Mankato Family Dentistry, with five of the 22 events completed.
 
MSU runners swept the top five podium places in the 300-meter run, led by senior Kenry Atubel's 34.55 first-place effort.  Not only did Atubel win the event, but he turned in the third-best time in program history and the ninth-best mark in the NCAA Division II record book.
 
Sophomore Junior Pontes Da Veiga was runner-up with a time of 35.04, tying for the ninth-best mark in MSU history and 22nd in NCAA Division II history, with freshman Qai Hussey right behind in third (35.31), which is 14th all-time in the Maverick record book.  Taking fourth and fifth, respectively, were sophomore Marvin Dure (35.55) and senior Eddie Blackwell (35.61).  Also scoring in the 300-meter run was sophomore Kyler Bade, who took eighth (36.25).
 
Two Mavericks scored in the 3000-meter run, led by sophomore Ray Ure's third-place finish (8:53.41), with fellow sophomore Nikolai Schmanski claiming seventh (9:06.84).  Freshman Braxton Stewart finds himself in seventh-place in the heptathlon with a point total of 2695 after the first day of competition in the event, and will finish up the final three events tomorrow.
 
The Mavericks will conclude the Mark Schuck Open & Multi, presented by North Mankato Family Dentistry, tomorrow beginning at 10:00 a.m. in Myers Field House on the campus of Minnesota State.
