Mavericks Drop Road Contest at Northern State

ABERDEEN, S.D. —- Minnesota State suffered its second consecutive loss Friday evening on the road as the Mavericks fell to Northern State 104-87.

With the loss, MSU drops to 13-6, including a 7-6 NSIC record. With the win, NSU improves to 14-5, including a 10-3 conference record.

The first half began with the Wolves connecting on their first six three point shots to take an 18-5 lead three minutes into the game. The Mavericks got back to within eight points of the Wolves with five straight points but NSU would still hold a double-digit lead at 31-16 midway through the opening stanza.

The Mavericks got back to within nine points of the Wolves at 44-35 with 5:13 to go in the half, but NSU would outscore MSU 14-4 in the final five minutes of the half to take a 58-39 lead into halftime.

Sophomore Kyreese Willingham led the Mavericks in the first half with 17 points, while sophomore Tyrell Stuttley scored nine points. As a team, MSU shot 40.6% from the field in the first half.

Josh Dilling led the Wolves with 16 points in the first half. As a team, NSU shot 70.4% from the field in the first half.

The Mavericks managed to get back within 14 points of the Wolves at 70-56 with 12:32 to go but they would get no closer as the Wolves went on to secure the 104-87 win.

Kyreese Willingham led the Mavericks with 26 points and six rebounds, while senior Trevor Moore finished with 22 points. Stuttley added 12 points also, while junior Malik Willingham tallied eight points, seven rebounds and seven assists.

As a team, MSU shot 42.9% from the field as they hauled in 41 rebounds and passed out 14 assists.

Dilling and Jacksen Moni led the Wolves with 22 points each, while Sean Masten tallied 20 points and nine assists.

As a team, NSU shot 56.5% from the field, including a 44.1% showing from three point range.

Minnesota State wraps up its road trip on Saturday as it takes on MSU Moorhead. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
