Mavericks Blank Sun Devils to Record Their Second Consecutive Road Sweep

TEMPE, Arizona – Senior Brendan Furry notched his third consecutive multiple-point game and #17 Minnesota State turned a 1-0 lead after the first period to a 4-0 advantage after the second enroute to a 5-0 win and a series sweep at Arizona State.

Despite being out-shot, 16-10, in the opening 20 minutes, the Mavericks scored the lone goal of the frame when senior  Cade Borchardt tipped in a pass from freshman Christian Fitzgerald at the top of the crease just 70 seconds into the contest.

The second period got off to an even faster start for the visitors when Furry took a pass from junior Josh Groll and used a forehand-to-backhand deke to get around Sun Devil goalie T.J. Semptimphelter and tuck the puck into the goal for his seventh tally of the season at the 25-second mark of the period.

Freshman Adam Eisele set up the next two goals for MSU, just his second and third assists of the season.

The first came when he fed to senior Ryan Sandelin, who moved into the slot and waited for a screen to form before firing home his team-leading 11th goal of the season, on which Groll picked up the secondary assist at the 5:36 mark.

The third goal of the period came with 37.8 seconds remaining sophomore Zach Krajnik recorded his first goal of the season by taking a carom off the back wall and then tucking a backhander underneath Semptimphelter.

With the game all but decided, the Mavericks added their first power-play goal of the weekend when junior Akito Hirose's shot rang off the pipe and into the back of the net with the visitors on a 5-on-3 power-play. Junior Jake Livingstone picked up his team-best 17th assist of the season and Furry completed his two-point game with his 10th helper and second point of the night.

After the being outshot 16-10 in the first period, MSU held a 21-10 advantage over the final 40 minutes and had a 31-26 edge for the game.

Sophomore Keenan Rancier raised his record to 8-6-1 by stopping all 26 shots he faced and picked up his first career shutout.

The Mavericks (14-9-1) return home for the first time in over a month with a Central Collegiate Hockey Association series, Friday and Saturday, versus Lake Superior State.
