Mavericks Back on the Road for More NSIC Play

The Minnesota State volleyball team will face MSU Moorhead and Northern State on the road for more Conference action

Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State volleyball team continues with another weekend of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matches. The Mavericks play on the road at Moorhead Minn. friday at 6:00 p.m. to face MSU Moorhead and Saturday at 2:00 p.m. against Northern State at Aberdeeen S.D.

Minnesota State is 1-11 and 0-4 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The Mavericks dropped to #7 Southwest Minnesota State last weekend 2-3 (23-25, 25-12, 25-16, 25-27, 15-3) and Sioux Falls 2-3 (25-22, 19-25, 25-14, 21-25, 15-12).

About the Mavericks: Junior Sophie Tietz leads the Mavericks with 90 kills for the start of the season. Junior Makayla Snow leads on assists with a total of 226 and nine aces. Senior Brenna Hesse is leading the Mavericks with 107 digs. Sophomore Kiya Durant leads the team with 55 blocks.

"I loved the fight we have tonight," head coach Corey Phelps said after playing #7 Southwest Minnesota State. "SMSU is a very good team, and we went swing for swing most of the night. We will keep working on our discipline and continue to take steps in the right direction".

Minnesota State averages 11.73 kills and 15 digs per set for the start of the season. Sophomore Kiya Durant recorded a total of 16 blocks for the Mavericks last weekend. Durant had a match-high of eight block assists and three solo blocks against Sioux Falls.

About the Dragons: MSU Moorhead stands ninth in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference following the fourth week of competition. The Dragons are currently 2-2 in conference play and have a record of 5-7.

Bridget Witzmann is leading the team with a total of 143 kills. Brooke Walthall has recorded 159 digs since the start of the season. Emily Skalicky leads the team with 285 assists.

MSU Moorhead is coached by Bob Jones. He is in his second season as a Dragon.

About the Wolves: Northern State stands eighth in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference following the fourth week of competition. The Wolves are 2-2 in conference play and have a record of 7-5

Sally Gaul leads the team with 156 kills. Keri Walker has recorded 399 assists since the start of the season. Madison Langlie is leading the Wolves with 150 digs.

Northern State is coached by Brent Aldridge who is in his 12th season as a head coach for the Wolves.


Coming Up: Minnesota State continues its season playing at home Sept. 30th against Minot State at 6:00 p.m. and Oct. 1st against University of Mary at 2:00 p.m.
