#16 Minnesota State Slugs Their Way Past UMary in Doubleheader Sweep

BISMARCK, N.D. --- The Minnesota State softball team (42-10, 24-4 NSIC) traveled to the University of Mary to take on the Marauders (7-35, 5-17 NSIC) in a Sunday afternoon doubleheader. In game one, Minnesota State got off to a slow start but, the bats came to life as they cruised to a 7-2 victory. Game two saw the Mavericks launch four homers to overpower the Marauders in the 12-4 win.

GAME 1

Mackenzie Ward (26-3) got the start in the circle for the game one win. In six innings pitched, Ward gave up one earned run on two hits. She racked up 10 K's with no walks in 20 batters faced. Katie Bracken sealed the deal as she pitched one inning of relief giving up one earned run on two hits with two strikeouts in five batters faced.

Hannah Chambers (2-11) starter for the Marauders in the loss. In four and a third innings pitched, Chambers gave up four runs, three of which were earned, on seven hits. She had one K and three walks while facing 23 batters. Nicole Eckhardt pitched two and two third innings giving up three earned runs on six hits. She had one walk and strikeout in 14 batters faced.

After two scoreless innings by both teams, the Mavericks struck first in the top half of the third. Cheyenne Behrends doubled to center bringing in Ellie Tallman who had a leadoff single. After MSU put UMary down in order, they added a run from an error by the center fielder as Sydney Nielsen crossed the plate. In the fifth, Minnesota State added two more runs on back-to-back RBI doubles from Kylie Sullivan and Torey Richards. In the bottom half the Marauders got one back as Brooke McClure doubled to left field scoring Brooke De Jong. Behrends in the top of the sixth added a third RBI to her day with a single to center scoring Sydney Nelson. Later in the inning, Courtney Baxter added two more runs for good measure with a two RBI single to left field extending the MSU lead to 7-1. Bracken steeped in to finish the Marauders off but, not before allowing one more run from an RBI single to left field. Bracken recovered quickly and ended the threat with a strikeout. MSU took game one with a 7-2 victory.

GAME 2

McKayla Armbruster (9-5) got the start in the circle for the game two win. In three innings pitched, Armbruster gave up three earned runs on five hits with five K's while facing 14 batters. Kacy Nickerson pitched two innings in relief giving up one earned run on one hit with one strikeout and two walks facing eight batters. Bracken finished the final two innings allowing just one hit and earning one K while facing eight batters.

Emari Evans (2-12) started game two in the Marauders loss. In one and two third innings pitched, Evans gave up seven earned runs on seven hits with two walks while facing 13 batters. Eckhardt pitched four and a third innings of relief giving up five earned runs on eight hits with four K's and a walk in 24 batters faced. Chambers finished the game for the Marauders giving up a hit and a walk while facing four batters.

The Mavericks wasted no time in the first as Richards started the scoring off with a two RBI double to right field. Baxter added two more runs in the first with a two-run blast over the center field wall putting the Mavericks up 4-0. This was the first of four MSU dingers in the game. Hailey Forshee drove in a run of her own with a single to right field. In the bottom half of the first, Hale Berube for the Marauders singled to left scoring a run and ending the first with the Mavericks up 5-1. The top of the second continued to see the Mavericks bats light up the scoreboard. Behrends brought home Madi Newman with a SAC fly to right field. Then, a pair of solo shots from Sullivan and Richards extended the MSU lead to 8-1. After a scoreless third, Nielsen added to the tally with an RBI single to center. With the Mavericks leading 9-1, the Marauders narrowed the gap just a bit with a pair of home runs themselves from Hale Berube and Devyn Ritz to make the score 10-3 MSU. The Mavericks thwarted a Marauders threat in the sixth and went on to push their lead ahead again in the seventh. The fourth and final homer came from Forshee with a solo shot to center and Newman added the 12th and final run with an RBI single. The Mavericks defense put the Marauders down in order to seal the 12-4 victory and sweep.

Minnesota State finishes the regular season tomorrow as they travel to Minot, N.D. for the final doubleheader against the Beavers. First pitches are slated for 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., respectively.
