MANKATO, Minn. -- The Minnesota State Maverick baseball team took down the Upper Iowa Peacocks 20-3 in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Baseball game played Sunday night at ISG Field.
Now riding a season-high 10-game winning streak, the Mavericks are 30-5 this season with a 23-3 mark in league games and hold the top spot in the NSIC standings. The Peacocks now stand 9-27 and 7-18 in the NSIC after the loss.
Swinging the hot stick on the offensive was shortstop Aidan Byrne, who batted three-for-five with six RBI and two runs scored. On the mound, right-handed pitcher Cam Kline, now 6-0 on the season, brought his best stuff, pitching five complete innings where he surrendered just one home run that resulted in a hit and a run. He walked one and struck out six along the way as well. Also a two-way threat, Kline batted three-for-four in the contest, had five RBI and scored three runs.
The Mavericks hit the ground running in Sunday's game, scoring six runs on four hits in the first inning. Kline got the rally started with a single through the left side to score a pair, making it 2-0. After Byrne drove in another, first baseman Ross Indlecoffer broke the game wide open with his fourth home run of the season, a towering three-run shot over the fence in left-center. MSU led UIU 6-0 after one inning at ISG Field.
In the second inning, MSU extended its lead to 11-0 by scoring five runs on seven hits.
The third inning saw the Mavericks increase their lead to 13-0 once Kline and Byrne each struck again to drive in one more run, respectively.
After the Peacocks generated some offense in the fourth inning to score one run, the Mavericks matched it, and then some, by scoring five more runs to take a massive 18-1 lead.
The scoring concluded in the sixth inning when both sides scored another pair of runs. All in all, MSU defeated UIU 20-3 in game one of three, Sunday night.
Hits wrapped up in favor of the home team Mavericks by a 21-3 margin. MSU was also sound on the defensive and had no errors while UIU finished with one in the contest.
The Mavericks and Peacocks rematch Monday for the series finale, which will be a seven and nine-inning doubleheader. The action begins with the first pitch scheduled for noon at Bowyer Field.
