MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State baseball team saw its nine-game winning streak snapped Sunday afternoon as Northern State bested the Mavericks 11-7.
With the loss, MSU drops to 20-5, including a 13-3 NSIC record. With the win, NSU improves to 10-13, including a 5-5 conference record.
Mitchell Tolk (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the Wolves as he allowed just one run in four innings, while striking out four. NSU's starter Seth Brewer gave up six runs in five innings of work. MSU's
Jack Zigan (3-1) took the loss in relief as he gave up six runs in 0.1 inning. MSU starter
Collin Denk earned the no decision as he gave up four runs, two earned, in five innings while striking out four.
NSU opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as Jack Paulson homered to right field, before Ramon Vega Jr. drove in a run with an RBI-single to put the Wolves up 2-0. The Mavericks would respond with six runs over the course of the next three innings to take a 6-2 lead. In the second,
Adam Schneider drove in a run with a single to center field, before RBI walks from both
Aidan Byrne and Schneider put MSU up 3-2 in the top of the third. In the top of the fourth, a three-run home run to left field by
Cam Kline put MSU up 6-2.
The Wolves would get runs in the bottom of the fourth and the fifth to cut MSU's lead to 6-4, but an RBI-double from
Nick Altermatt in the top of the sixth put the Mavericks back up by three at 7-4. The Wolves answered right back in the bottom of the seventh as they drove in six runs to go up 10-7. NSU's Karson Hesser recorded a solo home run to right field, before Isaiah Chevalier hit a grand slam down the right field line.
The Wolves added one more run in the bottom of the eighth as they went on to win 11-7.
Minnesota State continues its season on the road this Tuesday as it takes on Minnesota Crookston. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
