SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- In a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference series opener against the University of Mary, the Minnesota State baseball team was defeated by a final score of 6-3, Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field in Sioux City.
With the loss, MSU fell to 11-4 (4-2 NSIC) on the season while UMary improved to 9-9 (1-2 NSIC) with the victory.
The Marauders opened the scoring and took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when James Martin hit an RBI single up the middle to drive in Ty Jones.
In the third inning, UMary extended its lead to two when Calvin James scored from third on a passed ball. After three innings in Sioux City, the Marauders led the Mavericks 2-0.
The sixth inning saw the Marauders' lead triple when Kyle Jameson was hit by a pitch that forced Martin to score from third with the bases loaded. One batter later, the Marauders scored again when James drew a free pass, allowing Noah Hull to walk in from third. Then, Marauders' first baseman Drew Shoen doubled down the leftfield line to break the game wide open by scoring another pair of runs. The rally ended there as UMary grasped a 6-0 advantage through six innings.
The Mavericks mounted a comeback effort in the eighth inning and cut the deficit in half, 6-3, thanks to an RBI double from Nick Altermatt and RBI groundouts from Cam Kline and Jackson Hauge. However, the late surge was stopped there as Paxton Miller struck out the side in the ninth to pick up his first save of the season. Earning the win was Jonathan Draheim, who moved to 1-2 on the season.
Starting on the hill for the Mavericks was senior right-handed pitcher Brendan Knoll, who was handed his first loss of the season and now stands 3-1 on the campaign. Knoll pitched 4.1 innings and allowed three hits as well as a pair of unearned runs. He walked four and struck out three batters along the way.
En route to the win, UMary also led the hits department, 7-4. MSU had the lone error in the game.
Minnesota State and UMary square off again on Sunday to wrap up the three-game series with a seven and nine-inning doubleheader beginning at noon in Sioux City.
